Alley Pond Park

Alley Pond Park is a great place for wild foods, and the summer is an especially rich season.

This is a superb park for summer berries. We'll collect the season's last black raspberries and the first wineberries, growing in openings in the woods and along the edges of paths.

In one spot in the woods, we'll find ramp bulbs, the best-tasting onions you'll ever experience.

Use these super-flavorful bulbs in place of onions or shallots in any recipe, for vastly superior results.

Herbs and greens abound throughout the park. We'll be finding purslane, lamb's-quarters, lady's thumb, greenbrier, Asiatic dayflower, wood sorrel, and sheep sorrel, in locations throughout the park.

We'll find sassafras, which makes outstanding root beer, and black birch, which tastes like winterfresh gum, both very common trees.

This is also an excellent park for wild mushrooms. We may find chicken mushrooms, black-staining polypores, chanterelles, russulas, or boletes if there's been enough heavy rain beforehand.

The 4-hour walking tour begins at 11:45 AM, Saturday, July 5, at the northwest corner of Winchester Blvd. and Union Tpke. in Hollis, Queens.
