Bartlett Arboretum

The Bartlett Arboretum includes woods, wetlands, and thickets in addition to cultivated areas, so it's an excellent venue for mid-summer foraging, with many wild plant species in great abundance.

The sunny borders between woodlands and open areas provide prime habitat for wild herbs and greens. We'll look for sheep sorrel and wood sorrel, with their wonderful lemony flavors. Poor man's pepper, a common, delicious wild mustard, along with its more abundant relative, garlic mustard, now bearing spicy seeds, will also appear in great abundance. Another species with spicy seeds is field garlic, even better than commercial garlic.

The berry season is in full swing, so we'll be on the lookout for luscious wineberries, tart sumac, savory elderberries, and incredibly tasty wild blackberries.

Elderberries

These highly flavorful berries must be sweetened and cooked—then they're outstanding.

In the woods, we'll hunt for more edible and medicinal herbs and beverages such as sassafras, black birch, and jewelweed, a preventative for poison ivy.

With enough rain beforehand, choice edible mushrooms such as chanterelles, chicken mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, parasol mushrooms, black trumpets, russulas, and boletes (as well as deadly amanitas) may be coming up in the woods. The medicinal tonic, the reishi mushroom, should also be around.

The 2-hour walking tour begins at 1 PM, Saturday, August 2, at The Bartlett Arboretum 151 Brookdale, Ave., in Stamford, CT.
