Reis Park
Sunday, April 5

This free 60-minute tour, sponsored by the Somers Library, features sunny lawns, edge habitats, and a hiking trail, idea for early spring foraging. We'll be looking for herbs and greens such as sour sheep sorrel, corn-flavored chickweed, savory dandelions, spicy field garlic, and the even more garlicky flavored garlic mustard.

Cultivated areas will feature daylily shoots. Known as a garden ornamental in America, it's a favorite in Chinese cuisine.

Disturbed areas will feature the first growth of burdock, with a delicious and healthful taproot. We could even find wild carrots in overgrown sections, and since the park is on Primrose St., common evening primrose root won't be a great surprise!

These shoots, which taste a little like string beans, are great in soups, stews, casseroles, stir-fry dishes, and salads. They're extremely widespread and abundant in early spring.

The free 60-minute walking tour begins at the Somers Library, 82 Primrose St., in Somers, NY, at 2 PM, Sunday, April 5. In case of severely inclement weather, in indoor presentation at the library will replace the tour.
